Richard Sinclair, director and presenter at Radio Wigwam, was back in Wrexham for his third Focus Wales festival, bringing with him the momentum of one of the world’s most influential grassroots music platforms, Radio Wigwam. He spent Friday afternoon with us over a couple of pints in one of the music venues for the weekend, The Fat Boar.

This year, Richard and his team recorded a special edition of their popular Wigwam Jam podcasts live from Bank Street Social across all three nights of the festival—capturing candid conversations with emerging artists, industry insiders, and festivalgoers shaping the future of independent music. The Wigwam Jam Podcast features interviews, live unplugged performances and great tunes from Radio Wigwam independent artists.

Radio Wigwam, known as the UK’s leading 24/7 grassroots radio station, has built its reputation on a simple but powerful ethos and Richard summarised it as “If we like it, we play it.”

With over 100,000 followers across different social platforms and a growing global audience, the station champions unsigned and under-the-radar talent, offering real exposure through curated airplay and digital promotion. “There’s no catch,” Sinclair emphasises. “We’re here to support the creative sector, it’s that simple.”

The station’s impact goes beyond broadcasting. Each year, Radio Wigwam hosts more than 50 live showcases across the UK—from The Bedford in London to Sound City in Liverpool—and presents its prestigious annual awards, celebrating the best in independent music worldwide. Their content is shared not only on-air but also via YouTube and live streams, where thousands tune in not just to listen, but to watch performances and behind-the-scenes moments.

“We’ve got global airplay reach now,” Richard added proudly. “But it’s not about algorithms—it’s about heart. Every track we play is chosen because we believe in it.”
Looking ahead, Sinclair is keen to deepen Radio Wigwam’s ties with Wrexham, exploring potential partnerships with local venues to host regular recording sessions and live events. With the city’s bid for UK City of Culture 2029 gaining traction, the synergy between Visit Wrexham and Radio Wigwam could now open new doors for mutual growth.

“We want to foster real connections,” he says. “Whether it’s through video podcasting, live streams, or simply getting more people to hear about the incredible talent here, our goal is to keep building engagement—for the artists, for the audience, and for communities like Wrexham that breathe real life into music.”

We enjoyed our time meeting with Richard and look forward to helping him build bridges for Radio Wigwam right here in Wrexham. We love FOCUS Wales and have been sponsors for some time, but for us that special event is all over after just 4 magic days. This could be an exciting way to extend the enjoyment of local live music all year round using technology. We think many of our local bands who deliver world class performances would want to tap into new global audiences through exciting platforms just like this. So we'd encourage you to check them out!
