Iconic church and one of the Seven Wonders of Wales.
St
Giles
Church
The true ancestral beating heart of Wrexham, and set slightly above the streets below, St Giles’ Church is more than just a historic building; it’s the soul of our town.
800 years of history the
12th-century church survived a fire in 1810 to rise again with stunning Gothic architectural style.
Strictly speaking it’s a parish church - and not a cathedral - but is often dubbed the "Cathedral of North Wales" for its sheer grandeur. Today, you can’t miss its famous 136-foot tower, which has dominated our skyline for centuries and considered one of the Seven Wonders of Wales. Second only to our famous football club, St Giles is the most popular and photographed attraction anywhere in Wrexham.

Everyday
Hub
St Giles nowadays isn’t just about being an ancient building. It’s a lively community hub where history meets everyday life. From the thrilling sound of bell ringing to family-friendly summer festivals and local outreach, it’s a place where everyone is made to feel welcome. Whether you’re climbing the tower for epic views or just calling in for a cup of tea, St Giles is where Wrexham’s past and present truly come together.

Personal
Welcome
In the height of summer, we were welcomed to the church one Friday morning by the Vicar of St Giles, the Revd James Tout and kindly offered a guided tour around the tower and roof accesses by long term Church Worker Billy - giving us privileged views and insights into its extensive history.

Spiritual
Journey
St Giles Church offers a spiritual journey in where the building endures, but it is the community and people themselves that make it holy. Revd James Tout said to us, “We are the transient ones; the community stays. I’m happy to be there for them - but they are the body and the church. And we remind the congregation that they are the ambassadors for the world.”

Faith
&
Music
Music pilgrimage is core to their mission, weaving faith and sound into every experience. For those seeking a deeper connection, the church offers specialised tours led by three certified White Badge guides. Whether you desire a standard visit or a bespoke experience, their offices can arrange unique itineraries.
Tours
Highlights include exclusive tours of the tower and elegant afternoon teas, blending history with hospitality. Note that bookable fees do apply for these customised requests, but all proceeds do go towards the upkeep of the church. Regularly hosting group bookings made from all over the world, the team invite you to contact their offices to design a pilgrimage that resonates with your spirit, ensuring your time here becomes a cherished memory within our enduring community.
World
Wide
Appeal
Whilst we were there, we met visitors from Malta and from Germany as well as some locals. St Giles’ Church in Wrexham also shares a unique American link through Yale University. The university is named after Elihu Yale, a benefactor who, along with his wife, was a parishioner here. The church’s historic records and its connection to the Yale family highlight an enduring transatlantic bond, bridging Wrexham’s heritage with the prestigious institution founded in 1701.
Funds
&
Support
Being the busiest church in Wales it runs a packed calendar of events and services throughout the whole year. This ancient church requires a constant fundraising campaign going all year though; to meet its daily £600 costs in providing all the services the community needs and to ensure they can maintain and preserve the building and roof. This coming weekend event is special event and combines these elements called Bells, Bears and Family Fun, scheduled for 18 July 2026.

This July there will be a
Day of celebrating their 300th anniversary, of their great bell, a day of heritage and family fun in Wrexham’s centre.
With an opportunity to try the Mobile Belfry to learn bellringing, visitors can watch teddies zip down the tower, and climb the famous tower for stunning views. Enjoy a Teddy Bear’s Picnic at noon, browse craft stalls, and savour refreshments. This event supports their ministry while celebrating centuries of tradition and is perfect for history lovers and families alike - wishing to discover the magic of St Giles and their bells. This event is part of the church's popular community activities, which also offer regular Tower Tours on the 1st Saturday of every month.

The Longest Yarn
Later this year, starting October, St Giles will invite the community to join two meaningful events that blend creativity with remembrance.
First, The Longest Yarn will arrive as a vibrant celebration of community remembrance, where participants knit stories from World War II to honour our shared history. More than an exhibition - it aims to unite communities, bringing people together through shared history and craftsmanship. In addition, it aims to educate new generations by teaching the stories of the second world war in a tangible, memorable way. Lastly, it will support veterans, by raising funds for veteran charities and honouring their legacy.
Future Events
Their remembrance events will pay fitting tributes to the few who paid the ultimate price for the many with focal events for the community to attend services and pay their respects. These gatherings offer a unique opportunity to reflect on history while fostering community spirit through art and design and respect of our local and collective history.
We look forward to covering more stories and events at our beautiful local church and sharing their ongoing program of community events and developments with readers and visitors alike.
