As fellow Ambassadors for the Wrecsam2029 City of Culture Bid, we were invited to the Wrexham Street Dragons event on 20th August over at Colliers Park just outside Wrexham, and met up with Jamie Edwards, who serves as Head of Foundation & Community for Wrexham AFC.

Colliers Park is the official training ground of the Football Association of Wales with dedicated training facilities near Wrexham. More than just a football programme, Street Dragons is a great opportunity for North Wales youth, and for them to be part of something connected with Wrexham AFC.

Street Dragons transforms the long summer holidays for many into a vibrant hub of opportunity. By swapping the streets for the pitch, the event encourages young people aged 8 to 18 to be a part of something truly memorable and special. The programme’s Young Leaders Pathway empowers teens to mentor younger kids, where we saw them actively fostering confidence and leadership. This creates a thriving, engaged community of players who feel a genuine connection to the club.
Jamie described the event to us as a "gamechanger" that proves the club’s on-pitch success is being mirrored by a "positive impact within the community."
The event wasn’t just about football; it’s about "building a generation with life, leadership, and teamwork skills" while helping them tackle the root causes of social disadvantage, and “shows the real scale of what Wrexham AFC stands for and reminds us why this work matters so much to the city."
For Jamie, the ultimate goal is clear: using the club as a vehicle to "improve the lives of children and young people" by providing hope, confidence, and a safe space to thrive.
Street Dragons is a programme delivered by Wrexham AFC Foundation that uses football as a tool to engage, support, and inspire young people aged 8 to 18, particularly in communities facing social and economic challenges. It provides free weekly football sessions, mentoring, personal development opportunities, and educational workshops.
Jen
& Eva
Whilst we were there, we also met with Jen who is the proud mother of Eva Chalk who was playing that day. Eva is a young player who has played for the local Brickfield Rangers girls' teams. She was notably part of the U14 girls' squad that secured a historic "treble" (winning three major trophies) in the 2024/25 season.
Her proud mum also told us last year she played for Wales School Girls and got her first cap.
Eva is following in the family footsteps of the Wrexham AFC club as she is the talented daughter of Martyn Chalk, the much-loved former Wrexham AFC midfielder who made 242 appearances for the club between 1996 and 2002.
Tragically, Martyn suffered severe injuries in a road traffic collision in 2023, and club co-owner Rob Mac at the time launched a major fundraiser to support him and his family, highlighting the enduring bond between the club and its former players.
Rosie
Hughes
Finally we met with Rosie Hughes, the legendary striker for Wrexham AFC Women, and who is Wrexham Women’s all-time leading goalscorer, having scored 136 goals in 115 appearances between 2021 and 2026.
Rosie spoke with us for a few moments about the Street Dragons program as Rosie represents the pinnacle of what is possible playing for the Red Dragons, and continued to act as a great ambassador for the club following her fame in Welcome to Wrexham.
In September 2026, Rosie Hughes officially joined Connah’s Quay Nomads following her departure from Wrexham, ending a formidable five-year spell with the Red Dragons.
